Pygmy

 Goats

Pygmies are small, stocky goats that make excellent pets.  Their adult height ranges from 16 to 22 inches tall at the withers.  They require a sturdy fence that is at least 4' high and they must have a dry, draft free shelter during the cold winter months.  Goats do not like to be rained on, and they can get sick if they are not protected from the elements.  They eat almost anything - except good grass, so don't expect them to keep the lawn mowed.  They will gladly eat your flowers, rosebushes, and shrubs if they are allowed anywhere near them.  They do a fine job of cleaning the weeds out of your horse pastures as well.  Blackberry bushes and poison ivy are among their favorites.  They require hay during the winter months when they cannot browse, and a good quality goat specific pellet is recommended year round.  They can be noisy and are not suitable pets for families that live in the city limits.  Goats are herd animals and we never recommend keeping one alone.  They need another goat as a companion but sometimes they bond well with other animals such as ponies, donkeys, and llamas.  Goats are susceptible to attacks by dogs and other predators, so care must be taken to ensure their safety in their enclosure.   They are curious and active and love to climb.  Their antics make them very entertaining if they are properly confined, but your car will be a play place if they aren't.  Wethers (castrated males) and does make great pets, bucks sometimes do not.  Once they reach sexual maturity they can become aggressive during breeding season.  My buck Oliver is incredibly sweet, even when he's busy breeding his girls, so there are exceptions.  They will also develop a very distinct & unpleasant odor during the breeding season....they urinate on themselves to attract the girls.

We are focusing on "painted" pygmies, so there is a touch of fainting and nigerian dwarf blood in our doe herd to get color, but all of our girls are at least 1/2 pygmy.  All of them are pygmy sized so all of our home bred babies will be within the breed  standard for size.  One of our bucks "Oliver" is a Pygora, but he's very small (smaller than some of our girls even) and will produce tiny, beautiful babies.  We hope to have several paint kids within the next year.  At this time we are raising pet quality goats.  Our babies are not registered or show quality, but they are healthy, happy, and sweet!  We also occasionally have adults for sale.  We do not pull our kids and sell them as bottle babies.  They will be sold at 8 weeks of age when they are fully weaned unless they are rejected or orphaned.  All kids will have 2 doses of CD&T vaccine before weaning and they will also be wormed.  We give a 5 day course of Albon as a preventive for Coccidiosis at 3 & 6 weeks.  Bucklings will be castrated at 3 - 4 weeks of age unless they are sold as herd sires.
