Holland Lops are the smallest of the lop breeds and the only dwarf lop breed. They are 3 - 4 1/2 pounds fully grown & have the sweetest personalities! I have owned several breeds of rabbits and my opinion is that you cannot beat the personality of a Holland Lop. They can easily be trained to use a litter box making them excellent indoor pets.
If you are looking for a pet, especially for a small child, a male is the best option. Male Hollands are very affectionate and curious. Many people avoid males because of urine marking or spraying - they do not typically spray unless they are housed near a female. I have had 2 litter trained male Holland Lops in my house and no problems with spraying. Female rabbits can make great pets too, but some tend to get moody when they reach breeding age. They view their cage as a potential nesting area and can become territorial, growling and jumping at you when you try to reach into the cage. If you plan to keep a female as a pet only, spaying her would be a good idea. If you want a female to breed you can curb this unwanted behavior by offering a treat every time you reach into her cage. Fresh fruits and vegetables make great treats, but never feed lettuce or broccoli to your bunny. Lettuce can cause severe diarrhea and broccoli is toxic. Apples and carrots are regular treats for our bunnies.
Our breeding bunnies don't live in traditional individual cages. Raising them in a colony works much better for us and our bunnies are much happier. Our bucks do have to spend a little bit of time in an individual cage - we maintain pedigreed stock so only one guy at a time is allowed in the colony with the girls. The girls are left alone in the colony for 7-10 days when we switch bucks so we can keep track of who sires which litters. See pictures of our main colony set up below. They have a 64 square foot indoor area with food & nest boxes indoors at all times. The outside pen is almost 600 square feet and they have free choice to be indoors or out anytime they please. They spend most of their time outside, even when it's raining or snowing. I've noticed that they are usually only inside to eat and sleep, or if it's pouring down rain.
All of our Hollands are fully pedigreed and most come from show stock. Some of our babies may be show quality but we do not sell them with any guarantees as to how they will turn out. Our kids play with the babies almost every day so they are very used to children and being handled. They make good 4H or FFA projects for your kids!
